Neurodevelopment

Neurodevelopmental disorders are a group of conditions that occur in the early stages of development. They are characterized by deficits that cause impairment in personal, social, academic or occupational functioning. The deficit ranges from very specific learning limitations to global impairment of social skills and intelligence. Autism Spectrum Disorders fall within the range of neurodevelopmental disorders.

In recent years, a significant increase in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders has been reported: the only Italian prevalence estimates currently available come from the Emilia-Romagna and Piedmont regions, and stand respectively at 1:357 and 1:238 in the primary school age group.

In Italy, the National Autism Observatory of the Italian National Institute of Health found that in 2018 autism in children aged 7 to 9 was equal to 1.3%, affecting 1 pupil out of 77.

Autism Spectrum Disorders are socio-communicative disorders associated with the presence of restricted and repetitive behaviors and activities. They are a chronic and disabling pathological condition that affects a large number of families and represents a major public health issue with a strong impact on society.

Diagnosis can only be made from the age of 2, but the first symptoms are present from the earliest months of life. Studying what happens in the first 18 months of these children’s lives is essential for early identification and timely intervention, in order to reduce developmental problems and mitigate the final clinical picture.

Over the years, thanks to close collaboration with the La Nostra Famiglia Association - IRCCS Eugenio Medea and with the Italian National Institute of Health, SEGE has developed web platforms to provide tools supporting people affected by autism and their families.
